MGOC 40th Celebration
MG Owners' Club Celebrating 40 Years
|MGOC 40th Celebration, Swavesey
Saturday 13th - Sunday 14th July 2013
The MG Owners’ Club celebrated its 40th birthday in style over the weekend with hundreds of MGs sparkling in the glorious sunshine in the fields adjacent to the club’s headquarters in Swavesey, Cambridgeshire.
With guests and club members travelling from as far away as New Zealand there was a party atmosphere throughout the weekend culminating in the cutting of a huge birthday cake on Sunday by Roche Bentley, the founder of the club. Never the shrinking violet, Roche gave a potted history of the club’s beginnings and growth over the years having recovered from his rendition of ‘Mustang Sally’ (or ‘MG Rally’ as he called it) in the live music marquee the night before
Lancaster Insurance has enjoyed a long and warm relationship with the MGOC having itself been started by Roche in 1984 as the specialist insurance department of the club. Lancaster is now independent and part of Capita plc and was delighted to be part of the club’s weekend celebrations.
At the recent MG Owners’ Club’s 40 birthday celebrations, when given the choice between a dream home and a dream MG, nearly half (45%) of MG enthusiasts agreed they would opt for the car.
Mike Edgeley, managing director of Lancaster Insurance Services which conducted the survey, commented: “We aren’t at all surprised that so many chose the MG over their dream home because these cars possess such charm. To be honest, we were actually expecting the figure to be higher.”
The clear winner for ‘dream MG model’, with almost a third of the vote, was the MG B (29%). This was followed by the MG A (14%).
In the survey,* 60% stated that MGs are timeless classics and this is why they are the enthusiasts’ car of choice. 45% remarked on the MG’s suitability for leisurely drives along country roads and 33% hailed it as a perfect example of British motor engineering.
Mike added: “Lancaster Insurance has always enjoyed a long and happy relationship with the MGOC, having been established in 1984 as the club’s specialist insurance division. We were delighted to be part of the club’s birthday celebrations and it was a great opportunity for us to meet so many of our MG customers.”
As the event drew to a close Mike and Roche shared in presenting the MGOC & Lancaster Insurance Awards to the various regional clubs and club members which was a fitting finale to a great birthday celebration.
Lancaster Insurance is sponsoring this year’s Classic Motor Show at the NEC, Birmingham in November which is an exciting first for the company. With an expected capacity crowd, of over 60,000 people, this event will firmly establish Lancaster Insurance as a leading specialist in arranging classic car insurance in the UK.
