Part two of the Legends of Brands Hatch Superprix takes a look at racing action in the Classic F3 – Chevron B34 and below is a review by Max Bartell.
We were mixed with the Derek Bell Trophy (DBT) for Qualifying and Race 1, including Formula 5000, Formula 2 and Atlantic cars. I qualified P3 in class and 14th overall.
The DBT use rolling starts so they had to split the grid with Derek Bell cars leading in qualifying order and the CF3 cars were in a separate group around five seconds behind. Coming up to Druids on lap one, the lead three of Cameron Jackson, Gaius Ghinn and I were swarming the slower Derek Bell cars. I saw a small opening around the outside, down into the Graham Hill Bend and passed them all whilst Cameron and Gaius were blocked in and this was my chance to put some laps in. I was now on the back of the quicker F2 cars and managed to stay on their tail for the remainder of the race. I finished P11 overall, and 1st in Classic F3.
We shared our second race with the Classic Racing Cars which is open to all single seaters up to 1973. I qualified in P1 overall by 0.5 seconds with Richard Trott in P2 and Gaius Ghinn in P3.
This race was a standing start, I initially began well but selected 4th gear instead of 2nd and dropped to P2 into Paddock Hill bend. For around three laps I was right under the gearbox of Richard Trott and eventually got past into Hawthorns on Lap 6. I then maintained the lead and crossed the line only 1.9 seconds ahead of Richard Trott in 2nd place.
