Introducing Our November Bright Young Sparks Finalist, Sam Howson

‘Mini is a symbol of freedom’.

Sam Howson used his love of a Mini to liberate his life and find expression.

What inspired your interest?

‘I remember seeing a Mini in a car park and being completely mesmerised, it was the only car I could see the roof of from my wheelchair. My grandad’s stories about the Mini is what first sparked the spark. It wasn’t until 2017, when I bought my own Mini, that things really took off. Owning that car gave me something to focus on at a time when life was tough. It became a symbol of freedom. The Mini wasn’t just transport, it was part of my journey, both physically and mentally. It’s been with me through so much and it’s the reason SH3DART (Link: SH3DART | Bespoke Automotive Art & Classic Mini Prints) exists today. My Mini, with its modifications is my car and it’s become a way to express myself, too.’

Where did the art start?

‘I discovered 3D modelling while studying Animation at university. At first, I used it to visualise tweaks to my own Mini. I shared those experiments online, and the support from other Mini fans was amazing. Over time it grew into something bigger, and I started building full digital scenes with my Mini as the inspiration, and that’s how SH3DART was born. SH3DART is now both a creative outlet and a small business, supported by the King’s Trust, and it’s given me a way to turn passion into purpose.’

CGI 3D - how does it work?

‘CGI is basically digital sculpture. I build a 3D model using real-world measurements, then add textures and materials. I light the scene as if it were in a studio and render it into a final image. CGI gives me the control, whether I’m recreating something more real, or something more surreal. It’s about combining technical skill with imagination to store through visuals. I try to share the process with my community. Whether it’s something behind the scenes or a finished scene, through SH3DART I’m looking to be real about the ups and downs. My goal is to expand SH3DART into other digital prints. I’d love to create things that spark connection and bring the community to everyday life. I also want to turn my Mini into a rolling gallery, so it shows and inspires others alongside my artwork.’

“I create things that spark connection”
