Taking on the Screwball Rally in a Limousine

22 October 2025

Limousine

Any of us with a drop of petrol in our veins would not think twice about taking a road trip across Europe. You may well be the proud owner of an Orange Lamborghini Miura, contemplating a drive across the Great St Bernard pass, just like Enzo Moruzzi in The Italian Job. Or, perhaps a motoring holiday with your partner in a Triumph Spitfire. Whatever your classic car choice, it is all about the drive.

What happens if you don’t own a classic car and that road trip is looming?  Well, you go and buy an ex-funeral directors’ limousine of course! If you do this, why not make it an Australian Ford Falcon with a 4.0 six-cylinder engine? This car was converted into a funeral limousine by Dorchester specialist vehicles in the UK, this is Dave Hughes transport of choice for the forthcoming Screwball Rally.

Any car can partake; the only requirement is that the car cannot cost more than £1000 to buy.

All cars or commercial vehicles entered must have a minimum of 2 seats. The Ford falcon certainly meets that requirement and as a cherished and polished low mileage funeral car, it should be reliable, make the finish, have plenty of room for the team and all the camping equipment needed along the way.

Screwball will probably be the longest journey the car has ever done, (apart from a boat trip from Australia when new) and may be the fastest considering the cars previous life! Although all speed limits will be maintained en route.

In David’s own words, “I have always wanted to do a serious road trip with friends across Europe and the Screwball Rally visits France, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic - this is the appeal, together with the opportunity to raise some money for charity.

The teams have total freedom to choose their route but must reach certain checkpoints along the way, there will be a bit of fancy dress going on too, that may well include the cars.

With all the teams raising money for their individual charities there is serious side to the event though and over the history of the Screwball Rally more than £142,000 has been raised for various charities over the years.

Dave’s chosen charity is Love 4 Life, a charity whose aim is to create opportunities for people with learning disabilities and people with Autism to develop friendships.

Love 4 Life helps also them to learn new skills for life and maybe find love. Each of their journeys can be very different.

Dave has already raised over £1,000 so far.

The event takes place over six6 days from 15th September and Lancaster will be receiving reports and, updates as the event progresses. Follow our social media to keep up with the latest!
