Best YouTube channels for motorhome and campervan owners

05 May 2022

There are some brilliant YouTube channels out there for motorhome and campervan fans. The extraordinary range of content online spans everything from experts giving video tours of the latest state-of-the-art recreational vehicles, to couples and families documenting their adventures in their mobile home.

With accounts of some of the best destinations they’ve found as well as some great product reviews and key dos and don’ts, the latter are often both entertaining and inspiring. They are likely to prove hugely useful to budding motorhome and campervan owners, too.

Building up some basic knowledge like this will be essential in making sure everything goes smoothly when you head out on the road. Indeed, some basic knowledge of the best products, places to go, and things to do (and not to do!) should prove just as indispensable as arranging the right motorhome or campervan insurance.

Here are some of our favourite YouTube channels for motorhome and campervan owners. Perhaps you’re already following them?

The Gap Decaders

Phil and Izzy, aka The Gap Decaders, have spent many years of their lives taking road trips – indeed, they reckon on having covered some 30,000 miles across 28 countries. That’s some serious travelling experience – and Phil and Izzy are pleased to share all their hard-earned wisdom on their YouTube channel.

Essentially, a few years ago the duo made the momentous decision to quit work and sell their home – and they have been full-time travellers ever since then.

Recent experiences include a spell overlanding Europe in an expedition truck Tonka, as well as both motorhome and motorbike tours. Their blog, meanwhile, features road trip routes, motorhome and overlanding tips, and both cultural and practical advice for travelling around the majority of European countries.

Head to the Resources section of their blog, meanwhile, for some great advice features – everything from tips for stress-free long-distance driving to the road regulations across a host of countries. There’s also a great product review section, featuring honest assessments of all sorts of useful kit from sat navs to portable toilets.

Wandering Bird

Back in 2018, Kat – aka Wandering Bird – quit her job to travel Europe in her motorhome, with her husband and a puppy. A few years on, she is still living the dream – and keen to pass on her wisdom to all other would-be ‘van lifers’ so that they can share in this wonderful experience, too.

Kat’s YouTube channel is a veritable treasure trove of practical advice, product reviews, itinerary suggestions and much more. Her weekly videos feature genuinely useful tips and tricks, aimed at both newcomers to motorhome life and to more seasoned owners looking for new destinations and itineraries.

She’s also organised lots of her videos into some well-curated themed playlists, such as ‘New to motorhoming? Start here!’ and ‘How to stay off grid in your motorhome or caravan’. You can also access her free resource library, chock full of checklists, itineraries, wild camping tips and more.

The Roaming Radfords

The Radford family from Milton Keynes use their YouTube channel to share their adventures in their motorhome. Whether it’s a nerve-wracking video of getting caught in a storm going around Scotland’s North Coast 500, or introductions to some of the best camping and caravanning sites across the UK and Europe, parents Steve and Lyndsay and kids Eddie, Harry and George invite viewers to live vicariously through their various exciting motorhome adventures.

Over the years, the Radfords have owned a tempting variety of caravans and motorhomes: their current home on wheels is a 2016 Swift Kon-Tiki 649 Motorhome.

If you prefer to get your info from the written word, the blog section of their website is a useful storehouse of tips and advice. Questions tackled here include that eternal teaser: which is better for you and your family, a caravan or a motorhome? That’s a question, incidentally, that we also tackled in one of our articles on our own blog.

Whichever configuration you do end up opting for, make sure you specify the right motorhome or campervan insurance to protect your new pride and joy.

The McNeills on Wheels

This channel is different from some of the others we have profiled, in one crucial way. Whereas many of the couples or families vlogging about their campervan or motorhome adventures are spending just a small portion of the year (typically the summer) inside their mobile home, thirtysomethings Jamie and Stacey McNeill have made a full-time commitment to the lifestyle.

Back in 2018, the couple quit their jobs and sold their house, swapping all of this to live full time in a touring caravan in Wales. Their channel documents how this major lifestyle change has panned out for them – including the highs, the lows and every possible emotion in between.

Don’t worry, though: this momentous life change has clearly worked out well for Jamie and Stacey, and they’re using their YouTube channel to communicate to others the many benefits of life on the road. Some of their videos are refreshingly honest – titles such as ‘10 Things We Wish We’d Known Before Full Time Caravan Living’ show that these two are not setting out to sugar-coat their lifestyle choice. Instead, their mission is to explain how they’ve managed to make it work for them – and how you can follow in their footsteps.

Andrew Ditton

A caravan, motorhome and campervan journalist for the past 20 years, it’s fair to say that Andrew knows his stuff in the recreational vehicle world. For the past decade, indeed, he’s been a judge for the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s various awards, including Caravan Design, Motorhome and Campervan Design, and Towcar of the Year. He’s also written for the likes of Lonely Planet and Which? magazine.

Andrew’s YouTube channel has three main strands: guides to minimalism and living simply; caravan, motorhome and campervan reviews; and tales from his life in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. Within the latter strand, for example, we are quite hypnotised by Andrew’s videos documenting the various ferry trips between Scotland’s mainland and its beautiful, remote islands. Elsewhere, Andrew’s how-to videos on living simply are invariably illuminating and inspirational, and his various vehicle reviews authoritative.

Of course, a lot of people entering the world of touring vehicles for the first time will have one basic but essential question: ‘what type of vehicle best suits my needs?’ Before you get down to choosing a given marque or model, you need to figure out which style of vehicle – campervan, motorhome or caravan – will best fit your own travelling lifestyle and requirements.

And here, in particular, we’d point you to one very helpful, informative video on Andrew’s channel. Campervan vs Motorhome vs Caravan: which is best? provides a thorough rundown of the pros and cons of each of these three related, but distinct ways of taking your home on the road with you.

Bob Earnshaw

We can’t get enough of this amazing YouTube channel stuffed full of practical hints, tips and real-life adventures with Bob, his wife Jenny and their adorable pups. With 26.7K followers when we last visited, this couple’s relaxed, down-to-earth style captivates viewers who watch them arriving at different sites, visiting main motorhome dealers around the country, fixing problems with their home on wheels and more.

Recent expeditions have been to Towneley Hall, Burnley and Holmfirth – the home of Last of the Summer Wine. Why not add these locations to your own travel list this year, especially if you’re planning a staycation.

The Arriving At section gives you a first-hand view of sites around the country and a great overview of the facilities they’re offering - so you can see if it’s the kind of site where you’d feel at home.

There are also some great recaps on motorhome shows they’ve visited in the past, as well as a whole section for newbies - if you’re new to motorhomes, start here.

MotorhomeCampervan

MMMTV is the home of Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly (MMM) magazine online.

This is the place to head if you’re looking for motorhome reviews from the pros - this well established brand has been going for 55 years so you know you’re getting great advice.

We really enjoyed Peter Vaughan’s look around the new Rimor model recently. Prices for motorhomes and campervans have soared over the last couple of years, so it’s good to see just what you get for your money with up close and personal reviews like this.

The roundup from the spring NEC show is worth a look especially if you didn’t make it up to the show yourself in February.

There are some really great safety videos here too, reminding you about the dangers of cooking with gas when you’re at the campsite. And the technical editor is also on hand to show you how to do some pretty handy DIY jobs like making your own hook-up lead.

Elsewhere on the channel, you can even get a sneak peek at the latest issue of the magazine before you buy it in the shops.

The Motorhome Man

If you’re in the market for your next motorhome or campervan pretty soon, head on over to the Motorhome Man on YouTube for some first-class reviews to guide your purchasing.

This Shropshire-based business buys and sells homes on wheels and reviews each of the models that come in to give you a behind-the-scenes look and explain how they work, what the best bits are, where the potential problems lie and so on.

Want to know the best starter motorhome if you’re new to the scene? You’ll find the answer here. Confused about which is the best motorhome bed layout? Or which is the best buy for your budget? They’ve got a video for that!

We particularly like the fact that you can watch practical videos about motorhome problems and how the team solves them, day to day. It gives you a better idea of the potential issues to look for when buying your own second-hand van. Motorhome and campervan insurance can only cover you for so much after all.
