The First Holden Remembered

This is a vehicle that will need no introduction to any reader from ‘Down Under’ and many Britons will be familiar with the Holden 48-215 – aka the FX. On 29th November 1948, it became Australia’s Own Car, creating a nearly 70-year tradition that ended on Friday 20th October this year when the final Commodore left the production lines.

On the 6th July 1957, The Quarrymen, a skiffle group led by a student named John Lennon, were playing from the back of a flatbed lorry during a village fete in Liverpool. It turned out to be an historic day as it was the first meeting between John and Paul McCartney, and started the journey to the band being renamed The Beatles.

The original 158 Alfetta (‘Little Alfa’) dates from 1938 with Gioacchino Colombo devising a lightweight eight-cylinder 1,479cc DOHC engine that was fitted with a Roots supercharger.
