The ‘swinging 60's’ was a memorable decade with a lot of firsts, Beatlemania and a very famous job in Italy.
Here we profile some iconic events, moments and equally special cars that bring a wide smile to our faces whenever we think of them.
FACT OF THE 60’s: Lamborghini began making sports cars after he fell out with Enzo Ferrari, who dismissed him as a simple tractor maker.
The MG B – One of the most recognisable classic cars on the road. Over 500,000 were produced.
England Win the World Cup! They think it’s all over… it is now! Bobby Moore captained his heroic England team to victory over West Germany, winning 4-2 in front of 93,000 spectators at the original Wembley Stadium.
Ford Mustang: The definition of ‘Muscle Car’. The Mustang first made its appearance in 1964 and became an instant hit.
Space Exploration! The 60’s was a landmark decade for space travel. We had the first astronaut in Space in 1961 and then eight years later Neil Armstrong said the infamous words: “This is one small step for man… one giant leap for mankind,” whilst stepping foot on the moon.
Lamborghini Miura – the most stylish car ever?
The Italian Job: "You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!"
The Jaguar E-Type: Enzo Ferrari labelled this car the most beautiful car he had ever seen! It’s easy to see why – it’s a jaw-dropper.
Beatlemania: The 60’s belonged to the superstars that were called the ‘Beatles’. Their appearance at the London Palladium on Sunday 13th October 1963 catapulted them into the limelight and then on to world domination.
Ferrari 365 GTB: you may know it as the ‘Ferrari Daytona’. It had the unenviable task of replacing the 275 GTB.
Porsche 911: Hugely popular and still going strong over 50 years after it was first produced; and it has never changed it's shape!
We hope you enjoyed a look back at the cars and events that shaped the 60’s. Is there anything we have missed? Let us know on Twitter or Facebook.
